    Isn’t it so nice that all over the city we are celebrating and remembering some of our most valuable and cherished buildings: our old schools.Why? Because we are tearing most of them down. As with major portions of our past, we are moving forward with a program of wiping the slate clean so we can continue on our ‘progressive’ path with all things new, and therefore better. But is this necessary? With some things, yes, and with others no. It has been shown in innumerable cases the advantage of retaining things of true value and adapting them to current needs, either through upgrading or repurposing or integrating the old with new elements added, that we can preserve these valuable community assets without destroying the ‘community memory’ aspect of their existence. But the school board continues on with its program of demolitions. And we continue to ‘celebrate’ our past while destroying it…
