Calendar Dates: Complete Streets Meetings

October 7, 2016

The City is looking for feedback on its plans to create what they call a “complete street” on Commercial Drive.  They are holding two “open houses”:

  • Croatian Cultural Centre on 20th October from 3:00pm to 7:30pm;
  • Wise Hall on 22nd October from 10:00am to 3:00pm

More details can be found at the City website, though the display boards won’t be available for view until 17th October.

Most meetings on this subject seem to be dominated by those eager to put bike lanes on the Drive, but I am guessing the local BIA — strongly opposed — will also make their presence known.

I’ll be there pushing for more benches on the Drive, some way to ensure that bikes are kept off the sidewalks, and to object to the #20 becoming a limited-stop bus.

Howl!

October 7, 2016

Today is the 61st anniversary of the first public reading of Allen Ginsburg’s glorious poem “Howl“.

The reading on 7th October 1955 was at the Six Gallery in San Francisco, and the other poets reading were a constellation of some of the greatest and inspirational poets of their (or any) generation: Gary Snyder, Philip Lamatia, Philip Whalen, Michael McClure, and Kenneth Roxreth.

What a night that must have been!
