Reason #222 NOT to use Facebook
October 28, 2016Because they support racial exclusion for advertizers.
“When we showed Facebook’s racial exclusion options to a prominent civil rights lawyer John Relman, he gasped and said, “This is horrifying. This is massively illegal. This is about as blatant a violation of the federal Fair Housing Act as one can find.” The Fair Housing Act of 1968 makes it illegal “to make, print, or publish, or cause to be made, printed, or published any notice, statement, or advertisement, with respect to the sale or rental of a dwelling that indicates any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.” Violators can face tens of thousands of dollars in fines. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 also prohibits the “printing or publication of notices or advertisements indicating prohibited preference, limitation, specification or discrimination” in employment recruitment.
Seems that Facebook is the perfect vehicle for racists, white supremacists, and other immoderate radicals to peddle their hate-filled wares to their own kind.

Halloween as Community
October 28, 2016Commercial + Broadway — Again
October 26, 2016You may recall that there was to be an open house earlier this month to look at possible futures for the Safeway site at Commercial & Broadway in the post-Community Plan era. It was cancelled due to the sad passing of architect Bing Thom. Well, it has now been rescheduled.
- Saturday 19th November 11am to 3pm at Federico’s Supper Club, 1728 Commercial
It is interesting to note that this is now being soft pedalled as a “community social” with face-painting and balloon artists for the kids. More information available at their website.
See you there!
The Invasion of Grenada
October 25, 2016On October 25, 1983, the United States invaded the tiny Caribbean nation of Grenada (“Operation Urgent Fury”). The 1,500-strong Grenadian Army, along with 600 Cuban allies, were considered such a strategic threat to the Imperial Power that Ronnie Reagan sent in the Marines, lying through his teeth to his erstwhile ally Margaret Thatcher all the while.
Lest we forget: opposition to the power will be crushed ruthlessly no matter how petty it makes the power look.
Poem: In Those Days
October 24, 2016
in those days,
when we had nothing to lose,
when a shoestring would have
busted our budget,
you wouldn’t have been mawkish
if we’d lived in a belfry;
you wouldn’t have been angry
if it was ringing with bats.
you’d have loved it, and loved
life and loved me while doing it.
but these days,
when we have everything,
if it’s not designed by a consortium
of the better known architects
we don’t even look,
don’t even disturb our coiffeured
minds for a moment
unless it has the imprimatur
that others love it
and is, therefore, worth loving.

Happy 6,020th Birthday World!
October 23, 2016According to the calculations of Archbishop Usher of Armargh, today is the earth’s birthday. His calculations led him to believe that God created the world on October 23rd, 4004 BC.
Now, there are those who say his math is wrong, but let’s not quibble on our birthday!
