The War Before The War

cnt-ait-worker-fighting-fascist-beastEighty years ago today, the Spanish Civil War began with the Nazi-supported Nationalists seizing almost half the country.

With the Republican government vacillating, the fascists’ military coup may well have succeeded that very day without immediate armed resistance from the unions and anarchists.

As it was, the war would go on for three years, causing 500,000 deaths, and allowing the German Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht to train hard for the real show that began in 1939.
