Calendar Date: Kickstand Party

This coming Saturday, the local bike collective Kickstand is celebrating its third birthday with a party at Astorino’s Hall at the corner of Commercial & Venables.

The fun begins at 8:00pm with music and a DJ.  Entry is by donation and all proceeds go to keep Kickstand operating.

Putting It To Good Use

The old Salvation Army building at First & Commercial is to be used as a winter shelter for the homeless.

The report says that Rain City Housing will operate fifty beds in the building, “and will be aimed at serving the area’s homeless youth.”  No opening date is mentioned.

Great idea for this building!

Modigliani Record

It has been a while since I last posted about the art market, but I just couldn’t resist today. Amedeo Modigliani’s “Reclining Nude” was sold at auction to two Chinese billionaires for $170.4 million.  This is more than double the previous highest price for the artist, and falls just a little shy of the highest price ever paid at auction, for Picasso’s “Women of Algiers“.

I have always been a great fan of the work of Roy Lichtenstein. But even I have to gasp that his 1964 work “Nurse” fetched $96.4m.  Wow!
