It was a gloriously cool and refreshing morning to walk down the Drive today. A good start to the fifth year of this series.
I guess the Marquee has finally sold all its units. The storefront at 2240 Commercial which was its sales office is now vacant and for lease. Across the street, 2245 and 2247 are still vacant (10 months).
Down at 2018 there is something new (or at least new to me). Is it a new name or a new facade or nothing at all?
In the 1700 block eastside, the Brandon Block is still being refurbished, with the door to the apartments boarded up. The JNZ store is still not open (14 months closed) but there are strong rumours for a re-opening in October, which is great news.
The Strawberry Bakery space inside Il Mercato is still vacant (8 months), and the agents still seem to be looking for upstairs tenants.
Across the street, the apartments upstairs in the Odlin Block look vacant and rather bleak.
The same might be said about the block at 1401-1411 Commercial which is still being renovated and, I am sure, renovicted. The exterior is beginning to look rather smart, though.
At 1399 Commercial, the new Mama Lucy’s Peruvian restaurant still seems not to have formally opened, with display cases empty. However, as it is in essentially the same space as Al Basho it is hard to tell. I passed by too early to inquire this morning.
The old Scandalicious space at 1340 is still vacant (6 months). At 1268, the space is still vacant (27 months) but, after four months, the sign still says City Bistro is about to open. There’s no rush, I guess.
The north half of Joe’s Cafe at 1150 Commercial is still swathed in black plastic. It has been that way for several months now: quite the mystery. I suppose I could just ask them about it, but haven’t yet. Along the same block, the Give & Receive store at 1124 is now closed (1 month) and there is still no activity at the long-vacant storefront at 1108 (17 months).
The Peg antique store at 1003 Commercial has finally closed after 25 years with the owners selling the building. There will be some concern about what will now happen to the building which occupies a large corner lot.
The space at 950 Commercial, which has been vacant for 8 months, is soon to re-open as Nonna’s Italian Sandwiches. We wish it well.
Finally, the old Money Mart store at 902 is still vacant (4 months) but the windows have recently been papered suggesting that perhaps a new tenant is in the wings. It will be good to have that corner active again.
