Distractions From Toronto

November 14, 2013

I have work to do, some of which is quite important.  And yet, for the second day in a row, I find myself hooked by the live coverage of the Toronto Council.

Most of the stuff they are talking about has little to do with me, but the whole atmosphere — the turning of the backs of all Councilors whenever Mayor Ford speaks, the interviews that Councilors are giving in the lobby, the theatrics of the Ford brothers — is cabaret of the highest quality.

Yesterday’s session was non-governance by dysfunction, with shouting and interruptions.  Today is a lot more sedate but you never know when something might just explode in your face — like Mayor Ford’s interview on City Hall steps this morning.

Hard to believe that Canada has ever seen anything like this before.  No wonder I’m distracted.
