Local Kids Score Big!

November 3, 2013

The Vancouver Courier has reported that a group of Templeton students has majored at a Film Festival:

A short film made by Grandview-Woodland students surpassed more than a thousand entries from around the world to win Best Original Score at the inaugural All-American High School Film Festival in New York City earlier this month …

The students not only won best original score for their dystopian film Catharsis, which featured electronic, hip-hop-inspired music headed by former Grade 12 student Zak Youssef, but their film Amelia’s Spyglass made it into the top 75 films. A group of five students made both films.

Great stuff.  Well done to them and the school!

Adriane Carr’s Town Hall Meeting

November 3, 2013

I spent yesterday afternoon at a Grandview Town Hall meeting sponsored by Clr. Adriane Carr and the Green Party entitled “Development and Democracy,” a subject close to my heart.

Clr. Carr kindly gave me the opportunity to speak for about 15 minutes about the current community plan process and the failure of community engagement so far.  We also heard from Peter Burch [corrected from “Jack” Burch], a former City of Vancouver planner who was responsible for the Mount Pleasant Community Plan.

Mostly we heard from the 40-odd people in the crowd who asked insightful questions about the unsustainability of the current development/public benefits model and the lack of genuine public engagement in the Vancouver planning process.

A very worthwhile way to spend an afternoon.

Grandview’s Smokehouse Destroyed

November 3, 2013

Yesterday morning I woke to find news stories about a big fire at the north end of Commercial Drive.  Unfortunately the reports were unclear about where exactly the fire was.  Now, sadly, we learn that it was the Woodland Smokehouse that was badly damaged.

By all accounts the Smokehouse was a thriving business with a cafe, a deli and an industrial food supply business for food trucks among other services.  I had no idea, but apparently there was also a boxing gym in the building.

Anyway, it is sad to see the damage and I hope they can recover quickly.
