GWAC and BIA: A New Beginning

This morning, with my GWAC hat on, I had a meeting at the Calabria Cafe with Jane McFadden, the new Executive Director of the Commercial Drive Business Development Society, the Drive’s BIA.

For the last little while, the relationship between GWAC and the BIA has been tepid to say the least. They seemed to find consultation with residents outside their frame of reference, and they were terrible at responding to letters or requests.  A good number of the businesses on the Drive — the folks who pay the BIA’s bills — told me they had almost no contact with the group.  But I am confident that things are about to change.

Jane comes to the Drive from a position with the Yaletown BIA and she is personable, energetic and articulate about what she wants to achieve.  I was impressed. I predict that the sidewalks will soon be pressure-washed, and the big blue cup in Grandview Park will very soon — finally — become a planter. And that’s just the beginning. There are many ways in which the general community through GWAC and the merchants of the Drive through the BIA can work together to the betterment of the entire neighbourhood, and I am looking forward to working with her to that end.

By the way, I don’t get to the Calabria Cafe very often these days, but today reminded me what a great and friendly place it is.  I used to be a regular when I lived at that end of the Drive, and I’ll do my best to get back to it more often.

    Some people who frequented Calabria miss their back “smoking room” but most don’t. There was a fear that *$ across the street would kill business, but Starbuckians are solitary and never wen to Calabria.
    Calabria is social and still the better place to meat, eat and drink a better set of coffees and exchange or pontificate ideas.

    Still, too many cafes eateries on the Drive, creating space where you have to pay to sit down or enter. More shopping shops are needed as listed in the great historical “The Encyclopedia of Commercial Drive” [ ISBN-13: 978-1461095095 ]

    Oh, and 67 trenchant comments on the CBC’s version of the Monday meeting.
