I have written before about the damage to the Brandon Block at 1731-1739 Commercial. Now I am glad to report that the reconstruction work seems almost complete:
The current owners of the property are to be commended for their swift action in protecting this elegant building and restoring it to its old self.
I just received a shipment from Dell: two black print cartridges (don’t get me started on why I have to buy from Dell in the first place). Anyway, this was the packaging it took to get those two tiny cartridges to me (the sunglasses are included to give a sense of scale):
Is this really the best we can do?
A week or so ago, my wife and I found ourselves in Il Mercarto Mall at lunchtime. There is a new Japanese restaurant there called Wakaba and we decided to give it a try.
The menu is slight, but honest; and there are a prominent number of items with eel (unagi), which I love. When the chef heard my wife bemoaning the lack of edamame on the menu, he immediately said he had some and was happy to prepare them.
We stuck to the basics — salmon and tuna in both negri and sashimi forms, unagi sushi, gomae, the edamame — and it was good. The tuna especially was firm and rich, not squishy as some bars serve it. We were both happy with our meals. The meal was probably ten bucks more expensive than Britannia Sushi and the ambience is about the same.
Last night we went to the only-opened-this-week Windjammer Fish & Chips which has moved from its location on Main Street to the 900-block Commercial. The Drive has a long history — going back to the early 1920s — of fine fish & chips restaurants, though we haven’t had one in a while. Unfortunately, this newcomer was mediocre at best, though the staff was friendly enough. They did have malt vinegar which is a plus.
They serve the chips in snobby cups, but the plating would be improved if they served them au naturel on the plate itself.
We were glad to see eight sets of diners in the restaurant during the time we were there, people trying it out. I hope they succeed but, to be honest, at $47 with tip for halibut & chips, salmon & chips and two Guinesses, we might stick to Go Fish and PaJos where the fish is just better.
