“The Drive” Is Published!

My book “The Drive: A Retail, Social and Political History of Commercial Drive to 1956” is now published and available for purchase!

Signed copies can be purchased at The Drive Press website using PayPal.  Copies can also be purchased from CreateSpace.

In about a week, the book will also be available online at Amazon and in person at People’s Co-op Books, 1391 Commercial Drive.

It might be the most interesting read you have this year!

Will you be having a book signing?

Nothing has been arranged. The lack of a publisher’s email list makes it hard for a bookstore to stay open for an event (no guarantee of enough sales.) However, there may be an event in June – still worting on that.

And it has an ISBN, so bookstores can order it.
This also guarantees attention in the National Library books-publshed-notes from Library And Archives Canada.

I bought a copy. Worth it if you know the Drive and its early “white-bread” days. Do note the time period in the subtitle.

I wonder what Patricia Roy, UVic Emerita, would say about another streetcar suburb study.

Thanks for your comments! The second part of this history, taking it up to 1999, is planned to be out in Spring 2013. In the meanwhile, I have another study of the Drive to be published this October, and a detailed monograph on Commercial Drive’s buildings due in summer 2012.

Jak I received one of your The Drive books and now I need two more but I cannot increase the quantity on your Pay Pal order form I’m hoping that the nine dollar mailing charge could be adjusted for a two book order.

Hi Rudy: My best suggestion is that you order them through Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Political-History-Commercial-Vancouver/dp/1460933990/. They are on a slight discount and I believe you will qualif for free shipping. If that doesn’t seem like a good idea for you, please email me at jakking@shaw.ca and we will work it out.

Jak thanks for the quick reply I have no problem with ordering from Amazon I just thought that ordering from you would mean more money directly for you just as CD’s sold at recitals by musicians results in more cash in their pocket. I very much like your book on The Drive I lived there from 1953 to 1966 and now my son is renovating my fathers home which will mean four generations in that house as he has a infant daughter now. Looking at the cover image for ‘The Drive’ book I see the Grandview Theatre were as a child I was herded with an unruly pack of friends to Saturday matinee shows were it snowed popcorn, Cracker Jacks, and spit balls through out the showings…… Westerns mostly. The manager would come on stage and try to cajole us with offers of extra cartoons but mostly we were content with pulling Cracker Jacks out of our hair and flinging them into the crowd.
